Mandarin Oriental Taipei
What convinced us is the sheer craft on display: Mandarin Oriental Taipei is built around...
Eslite began as a single bookstore in 1989 and grew into Taiwan's defining cultural retailer, and this eighteen-storey hotel inside Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is its first venture into hospitality. Architect Toyo Ito gave the building a gently curved facade lined with balconies, a detail rare enough in Taipei that the hotel's own marketing leads with it, and the result won Taiwan's Golden Pin Design Award the year it opened. Inside, the brand's bookstore instincts show everywhere: a Lobby Lounge walled in roughly five thousand books, vintage photographs of Taiwanese life from the 1940s through the 1970s on every floor, and a reading culture built into the architecture rather than bolted on as a theme.
We chose Eslite Hotel because the concept runs deeper than a themed room or two: this is a bookstore group that built an actual hotel around its own cultural instincts, down to a Library Suite with over a thousand curated titles and staff trained to source any book a guest requests. Cassina furniture, Bulgari amenities in the suite, and artworks by Michael Lin scattered through the public spaces push the design well past novelty. It reads as a hotel for people who would rather browse a shelf than a minibar list.
The hotel sits inside Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, a converted tobacco factory now shared with the eslite Spectrum flagship store, the Red Dot Design Museum and rotating exhibition halls, so a stay here comes with a design district built in rather than a short cab ride to one. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and its gardens are within walking distance, and City View rooms look out toward Taipei 101, close enough that the hotel is a known booking for New Year's Eve fireworks.

Standard rooms work a nature-inspired palette with designer Cassina furniture and the kind of technical fit-out, 42-inch HDTVs, Bose sound systems, Nespresso machines, that a design hotel at this level is expected to carry. The balconies are the real differentiator, standard across all 104 rooms and genuinely rare for a Taipei hotel of this size. The Library Suite is the booking to aim for: 1,464 square feet with a dedicated reading room and adjoining dining area, more than a thousand books on film, literature, history and linguistics, and Bulgari amenities in place of the standard L'Occitane line.
In Between, the hotel's steakhouse, serves dry-aged cuts alongside bottles drawn from the Eslite Wine Cellar, the retail group's own wine business and one of Taiwan's most established importers, which gives the pairing list a depth most hotel restaurants cannot match. A sommelier on staff can walk guests through the cellar's Taiwanese and imported labels. The Lobby Lounge doubles as an informal meeting spot and a browsing room, with staff who will track down a specific title from the shelves or the wider Eslite Spectrum store downstairs.
Rooms lean toward design over scale, so travellers wanting the largest suites in the city should look toward Xinyi's larger international chains instead. The hotel's culture-district setting means weekends and exhibition openings can bring crowds through the shared building. Book City View rooms well ahead of New Year's Eve, when the Taipei 101 fireworks make them the hotel's most requested category.
